Keeping rabbits warm

We often get asked – can rabbits stay out all winter?

The answer is yes – but with some guidance.

Wild rabbits live in burrows that have a temperature around 10 degrees Celsius. Living above ground, it is important that rabbits have a space that is protected from the elements, a hutch which is raised off the ground that is both wind and waterproof is essential. This can be made cosy with hay and straw, and improved by having a snug insulated cover or an extra blanket wrapped around it – which must be kept dry. This is critical as rabbits can suffer from the same complaints that we do when damp.

In very cold conditions, you could consider heat pads that are easily available. Rabbits are likely to eat and drink more in cold weather so don’t skimp on the hay, and check their water regularly. Finally, as daylight hours are less, don’t reduce your interaction with your bunnies. This is important to them and a visit at dusk would be appreciated if they’ve seen less of you than they normally would.

Having a partner is great in winter, as snuggling up is an easy way of keeping warm, like Sage, Kanna and Muffin here, who are looking for their forever home.
